When planning your Angkor itinerary, deciding whether to visit Pre Rup for sunset or sunrise is straightforward. The 10th-century temple-mountain is famous for its late afternoon views. The sunset light catches the brick structures perfectly, making it a popular end-of-day stop on the Grand Circuit.

Is Pre Rup better for sunrise or sunset?

Pre Rup is much better for sunset viewing.

The best light hits the main brick towers from the west in the late afternoon. The setting sun turns the five central towers a deep, glowing red. The upper pyramid platform provides a sweeping view across the forest canopy.

Can you see sunrise at Pre Rup?

Official visiting hours for Pre Rup begin at 7:30 AM, which is often after sunrise.

Because the gates do not open early enough for dawn colors, you will miss the sunrise. Angkor Wat is the standard location for sunrise viewings in the park. Save Pre Rup for the end of your day instead.

Where is the best sunset vantage point?

The open upper terrace of the pyramid offers the best views.

You must climb a steep 12-meter stairway to reach this level. From this high platform, you get an unobstructed look over the surrounding jungle. On clear days, you can see the distant spires of Angkor Wat to the west.

How does the building material affect the sunset view?

The temple is built of brick and laterite, which absorb and reflect warm light.

King Rajendravarman II constructed the upper towers entirely of brick in 961 CE. This material reacts strongly to the golden hour light. The contrast between the red towers and the green forest is distinct in the late afternoon.

What time should I arrive for sunset?

Plan to arrive by 4:30 PM to secure a good spot on the upper tier.

A standard visit takes 30 to 45 minutes. Arriving early gives you time to explore the ground-level foundations before the light changes. Remember that the temple closes promptly at 5:30 PM.
