Pre Rup is an impressive 10th-century temple-mountain, but its physical layout demands vigilance from parents. The climb to the main sanctuary towers is challenging. Families can still enjoy the site by planning ahead and knowing which areas to avoid.

Are the stairs safe for young children?

The stairs at Pre Rup are steep and narrow. They are not safe for toddlers or small children.

The central pyramid rises 12 meters high across three tiers. The stone steps require good balance and often the use of hands. If you visit with young kids, it is safest to stay on the lower levels.

What should kids wear to the temple?

Children must follow the strict Angkor dress code. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter.

Guards enforce these rules for all visitors. Dress kids in modest, lightweight clothing to handle the tropical heat. Sturdy walking shoes with grippy soles are absolutely essential for safely navigating the uneven laterite stones.

How can families manage the heat?

Hire a private air-conditioned car and bring plenty of drinking water.

A standard visit takes 30 to 45 minutes, but the heat can exhaust children quickly. Hiring a car costs $35 to $50 per day. This gives your family a cool place to rest between temple stops.

What can children see on the ground level?

The ground level features large walls, six brick towers, and a massive stone vat.

The outer enclosure measures 127 by 116 meters. Families can safely explore the Eastern Gopura and the remains of long halls without climbing. Outer Enclosure contains plenty of flat ground for kids to walk safely.

What behavior rules apply to kids?

Children must not touch, sit on, or lean against the ancient carvings and brickwork.

Pre Rup is a sacred religious site dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Families must maintain respectful and quiet behavior. Do not let children climb on the fragile outer walls or the stone cistern.

When is the best time to visit with family?

The cooler dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time.

The temple is open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Late afternoon is famous for sunset views, but the upper terrace gets very crowded. A morning visit offers quieter crowds and lower temperatures for children.
